Let the Countdown to Start Your Engines Begin!

Hi friends! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and for those of you in the U.S., I hope you are having a wonderful Independence Day holiday. Today, I’m thrilled to start the countdown to the release of my new contemporary romance, Start Your Engines. Cue the confetti!

As we count down the days to Start Your Engines’ release, I’d like to share a few highlights from the story with you and talk about how they relate to real-life IndyCar style racing.

To bring you up to speed, Start Your Engines features race car driver Gabrielle Marquez and racing team director Brad Thomas. As teenagers, they were friends until a crash during a race they were competing in drove a wedge between them.  Ten years later, they are reunited when Brad’s boss hires Gabrielle to drive for their team, which is competing in Open Wheel Racing’s Continental Series, the second highest level of open wheel racing in North America, and similar to the real-life IndyLights Series.

One of the high points of the story is when Gabrielle qualifies on the pole for the Memorial One Hundred Race. It’s a big moment because it’s the first time the team earns the top qualifying spot for a race.  The moment is magnified because Gabrielle is the only woman driving in the Continental Series, and it helps illustrate that women can compete as equals with men on the race course.

While that portion of the story is made up, it is literally a matter of art imitating life. In 2010, race car driver Pippa Mann won the pole for the IndyLights Freedom 100 Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In doing so, Pippa became the first woman to win a pole in the one hundred years plus of racing at IMS. A pretty huge accomplishment, yeah?

That wasn’t the only time Pippa won a pole racing in IndyLights, though. Later that same year, she won a pole at the Kentucky Speedway race.

In Start Your Engines, Gabrielle wins a second pole in the same season, as well. I’ll let you read the book to find out how she pulls that off.

Start Your Engines, published by Crimson Romance, arrives August 7 in ebook format and is available for pre-order by clicking here. Thanks for stopping by, and until next time, wishing you sunny skies and smooth roads!
